McKinsey: Ignore Second Life At Your Peril

We must all be doing something good if McKinsey, the top consulting company, is writing about virtual worlds. Times On-line reports on April 23:

Virtual worlds such as Second Life will become an indispensible business tool and vital to the strategy of any company intent on reaching out to the video-game generation, one of the world's leading consultancies has said.

McKinsey & Company, the management consulting firm whose observations about corporate behaviour are closely watched, said that virtual worlds were on the cusp of a major expansion - particularly as a way to reach younger customers - and that companies were "ignoring them at their peril."

OK, it is part of a much larger report on on-line marketing. But still nice quote.

Airplane Tracking in Second Life

This is a technical demonstration -- and lots of fun....

This video show's how real-time aircraft tracking data can be used to drive a 3D display of aircraft in Second Life. The system uses fboweb.com's KMZ feed for Google Earth, with all SL functionality being developed by Daden Limited.

Hands Free 3D: Second Life Navigation Demo

From Mitch Kapor. A nice combination of technologies. (The 3D Camera was already designed by Israeli 3DV Systems). For more info see this News Item.

"It’s only a mere 3 months since Mitch and I sat together and decided to kick start this project," notes developer Philippe Bossut on the Handsfree 3D blog. "It was just a hunch, an itch to scratch: we both thought that the status quo– limiting the totality of our interactions with computers to mouse and keyboard, wouldn’t stand for very long. Indeed, researchers have been looking to make computing 'pervasive' for a decade now, using more and more inputs from more and more devices. But, until now, they have all been clunky and expensive. The recent eruption in consumer products of things like multitouch for iPhone and gesturing in Wii demonstrates that this is changing and that a wide public is eager to move beyond that mouse and keyboard world we’ve been bound to for the last 25 years."

The Look of 50,000 on-line users

This is a visual picture of 50,000 users currently on second life.
Left is general map, and right is local map for Metaverse Islands.

Second Life: New Web Based Search

As I was preparing a talk about Virtual Worlds search I was happy to see that Second Life now supports results on the web. There are few bugs -- but it is working. This has a lot of potential. I like it. (to get the url, go to the new search in-world, and copy the url from the lower part of the results).

Using Second Life for 3D math

One of the most interesting ways to look and use second life comes to us all the way from Paul Bourke from the The University of Western Australia. In his very well written web site "Representing and modelling geometry in SecondLife" he demonstrates some of the more unique features of generating objects automatically in second life.

Few of the pictures include: (There is also LSL code samples that explain how to build some of these programatically).

EXCLUSIVE - Rosedale to step down as Linden Lab CEO

Interesting news...

see full item in Reuters
(Last time I met him (Virtual Worlds) he looked very "busy" too busy...)

SECOND LIFE, March 14 (Reuters) - Linden Lab Chief Executive Philip Rosedale said on Friday the company he founded has begun a search for a new CEO with more operational and management expertise.

Rosedale will become chairman of the Linden Lab board when his successor is found, replacing Mitch Kapor, who will remain a board member and the company’s largest investor. Rosedale said he will also keep a full-time role at the company working on product development and strategy.

“This is my life’s work,” he told Reuters in an interview. “I’m not going anywhere, and I’m still full-time on this, probably for the rest of my life.”

SL change: No big numbr of users and 50K online

A minor change in the open page of Second Life means a lot.

Before:

After:

The Total Resident number (last seen as 9 million or so is gone).
Interesting move -- and I think a right one.
This number has less of a meaning.

52,400 Online now... is also an interesting fact. This is the highest that I have seen ever (usuall numbers were which was between 30k and 40k).

Seond Life to Start Age Verification

Just after SLCC conference, I got this message from Linden:

Hello, Dera Kit.

As you may have heard, we're implementing the first stage of an Identity Verification system beginning with age. Our ultimate goal is to give Second Life Residents the opportunity to reveal as much or as little real life information about themselves as they like, and to have that information verified. We see this tool as critical to supporting Residents in shedding anonymity and building trust-based relationships -- but only to the extent that they're comfortable.

We've engaged the services of a third party provider, Aristotle's Integrity, who will match information that Residents provide with information available in public records. You will be asked to provide your name, geographic location, birthdate, and an ID that is specific to your country, for example the last four digits of your social security number if you're American. We will not be storing any information except for a code that tells us there was a positive match. Integrity will not keep any identifying information about you.

Age verification will initially be used as a way to limit access to restricted content within Second Life. Therefore, in order to enter any parcel or region which has been flagged as containing restricted content, i.e. sexual activity or extreme violence, age verification will be required to ensure only adults, or people over the age of 18, gain access. Verifying age will be voluntary, except in this context.

Prior to launching age verification throughout Second Life, we're hoping you, the concierge customers, will help us out by trying the process and letting us know about your experience -- if you were able to accurately verify your age, if the process itself is clear and understandable, and what problems you encountered. Please visit the Age Verification link available from the Your Account section of our website in the right sidebar and enter the requested information. This link is currently only available to concierge customers. When you are finished, you will be asked to take a short survey to fill us in on your experience.

For more information on Age Verification in Second Life, please visit the Second Life Blog.

Thank you very much for your help, and your continued support.

Linden Lab
Creators of Second Life
The process is pretty harmless -- but you do need to put in your own name, and some very concrete data. I'm not sure exactly how this process will work for more FUN avatars.

1000 Facebook People Survey re second Life

As part of my own going research re the Metaverse I was asked by few people how many know about Second Life. If you consider all the PR that SL has, this is indeed a fair question. So using Facebook survey I asked 1000 people. These are the results. If you want the actual excel file please let me know. (ohh yes. I have a typo in Heard... sorry).

Feel free to comment and tell me what do you think the data mean?

Newsweek Cover: Alternate Universe

Newsweek cover this month is -- again -- talking about Second Life.

Second Life is emerging as a powerful new medium for social interactions of all sorts, from romance to making money. It may be the Internet's next big thing.

There is also a nice movie about a person in wheel chair and their life in Second Life.

Thanks to Cindy Landers for the tip.
